A NOTE ON THE FACTORS AFFECTING CORN BASIS RELATIONSHIPS
Empirical tests were made of components of the corn basis in the U.S. utilizing a general theory of intertemporal price relationships for storable commodities. These tests showed that the basis consists of a risk premium, a speculative component, and a maturity basis apart from other factors such as storage costs for storable commodities. The results provide insights into factors affecting basis patterns for corn.Demand and Price Analysis,
CASH AND FUTURES PRICE RELATIONSHIPS FOR NONSTORABLE COMMODITIES: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS USING A GENERAL THEORY
Empirical analysis examines the presence of basis risk, speculative component, and expected maturity basis component in basis relationships for nonstorable commodities. The results indicate that all three above components exist in both cattle and hog markets. The basis risk and speculative components vary across contracts. Hog markets showed seasonality, which helps explain the hog basis more accurately. Flexibility in making the marketing decision strengthens the explanation of intertemporal price relationships for both cattle and hogs beyond that previously attributed to only feed prices.Demand and Price Analysis, Marketing,
Influence of field-like torque in synchronization of spin torque oscillators
The magnetization dynamics of two parallelly coupled spin torque oscillators,
destabilization of steady states and removal of multistability, are
investigated by taking into account the influence of field-like torque. It is
shown that the existence of such torque can cancel the effect of damping and
can, therefore, cause the oscillators to exhibit synchronized oscillations in
response to direct current. Further, our results show that the presence of
field-like torque enhances the power and Q-factor of the synchronized
oscillations. The validity of the above results is confirmed by numerical and
analytical studies based on the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski
equation.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, Accepted for Publication in IEEE Transactions

Expansion of radio galaxies in a cosmologically evolving medium: Possible implications for the cosmic star-formation history
We compare earlier estimates of the volumes filled by lobes of radio galaxies
during the quasar era based upon non-evolving ambient media with new ones
assuming a strong cosmological evolution of the ambient medium. If the sources
remain active for over 10^8 years the volumes filled by them are found to be
comparable for the two scenarios. This strengthens our earlier inference that
much of the cosmic web of gaseous filaments, the site of galaxy formation, was
probably permeated by radio lobes during the quasar era and this could have
triggered extensive star formation and made large contributions to the spread
of magnetic fields and metals through the universe by z ~ 2.Comment: To appear in Bull. Astron. Soc. India; 10 pages, 3 Figures, basi.sty
